From war capability to peace capability

Analyses and materials on the history and future of war and peace

Von der Kriegs- zur Friedenstüchtigkeit

In the face of ongoing wars and new bloc confrontation with looming conflicts over raw materials and spheres of influence, it seems that humanity cannot escape the scourge of war. The call for deterrence and 'war capability' dominates, and global military spending is reaching new record levels.

But war is not a timeless fate. If you leave the molehill of some current debates and take a broader view, it becomes clear that it was only around 5,000 years ago that war based on scarce wealth became a social institution. It can be overcome in the future with an end to scarcity - just as slavery has already been overcome, which was considered the norm for thousands of years and whose time as a socially accepted institution is now over.

To this end, the book provides a 'big picture' from prehistoric communities to today's global crises. Drawing on extensive statistical and empirical material from evolutionary anthropology, archaeology, economics, technology, climate science and history, it develops analyses and theses on the current situation and prospects for global peace and shows how our current, unsustainable economic and production methods are constantly creating new scarcities and inequalities and thus keeping the vicious circle of poverty, growing hunger for resources and war going.

The Central thesis: In the 21st century, peace on planet Earth can only be achieved simultaneously with sustainability and prosperity for all, i.e. on the basis of the end of scarcity within the framework of an ecological and solidarity-based market economy.

»With great empirical depth and analytical clarity, the book shows ways in which peace is possible in the 21st century - an encouraging contribution to debates that we urgently need to have.«
