7 volumes: Materials on the history and future of labour

Following on from the rapidly developing global presentation of history, the IGZA has created timelines in recent years that show the developments in the most important dimensions and their links. The books „Matrix der Arbeit -Materialien zur Geschichte und Zukunft der Arbeit“ (2023) are a detailed commentary on these timelines. They contain analyses, theses, tables and 1,100 graphics on the history and future of work.

Summary: In the middle of a dark valley - prosperity and freedom at the end?

While the seven volumes of the materials primarily present the specific epochs of labour, this abridged version aims to link the historically broad view more closely with the perspectives of the next 100 years. However, the focus here is also on correctly summarising the empirical evidence from the various research fields of archaeology, anthropology, economics, history and the social sciences - in particular the common thread of productivity development.

From war capability to peace capability

In the face of ongoing wars and new bloc confrontations, it seems that humanity cannot escape the scourge of war. The call for deterrence and 'war capability' dominates, with global military spending reaching new record levels.

In the book 'Von der Kriegs- zur Friedenstüchtigkeit' (From war to peace), the IGZA presents a 'big picture' of the history and future of war and peace, with extensive empirical data, analyses and theses. The central realisation: peace in the 21st century is feasible - but only simultaneously with sustainability and prosperity for all.

Das Buch richtet sich an die englisch-sprachige Community und beinhaltet eine kompakte Darstellung der Kerninhalte der sieben Bände der Matrix der Arbeit auf rund 500 Seiten mit über 200 Abbildungen und mit einem Fokus auf die Zukunft der Arbeit – eine vor allem im empirischen Teil umfassend aktualisierte Auflage der Kurzfassung.

The book will be published on 18 May 2026 in Open Access by the academic publisher De Gruyter Brill and will be available as a printed book from July.
