Fellow
Jürgen Schmidt, born in 1963, has worked at Ruhr University Bochum and the Social Science Research Centre Berlin, among others. In addition to his work at the IGZA, the PhD historian was most recently employed at the International Centre for Advanced Study in the Humanities „Labour and the Life Course in Global Historical Perspective“ at Humboldt University Berlin. Since 1 July 2021, he has been Director of the Karl Marx House in Trier and remains associated with the IGZA as a Fellow.
His work focuses on the history of labour, workers and labour movements in the modern age, as well as the history of working time and technological change. In addition to numerous articles in journals and anthologies, his publications include „Brüder, Bürger und Genossen. Die deutsche Arbeiterbewegung zwischen Klassenkampf und Bürgergesellschaft 1830-1870“ (J. H. W. Dietz 2018), „August Bebel. Social Democracy and the Founding of the Labour Movement” (Bloomsbury/I. B. Tauris 2019, Rotpunktverlag 2013), „Arbeiter in der Moderne. Working Conditions, Living Environments, Organisations“ (Campus 2015).
